FriendFeed items not updating

Written By: Sol Young on June 16, 2008 8 Comments

FriendFeed + Delicious = 0

I’ve been using FriendFeed and del.icio.us more and more lately. Viigo (one of the best mobile RSS experiences available) has direct push to del.icio.us. It’s far superior to the iPhone’s mobile Google Reader sharing experience, so I’ve been happily consuming and sharing.

But FriendFeed isn’t updating these del.icio.us posts. It would be understandable if everything weren’t updating, but it seems to be del.icio.us entries. Flickr, blog entries, Google Reader, and Twitter items are nearly instant.

To get around this one can view his or her page, edit/add services, click the del.icio.us item, and finally click ‘refresh’ – but that’s hardly worth the effort.

Is FriendFeed feeling growing pains? Bret Taylor mentioned in a comment to Robert Scoble (who had similar updating problems) FriendFeed had a hiccup during a spider.

Personally, I doubt this was anything more than a technical glitch, but geez… The purpose of FriendFeed is to share what we’re doing on the Internet. If things aren’t pulling through, it’s a critical issue.

Sometimes things update quickly, sometimes they don't. I have two FriendFeed accounts, and made Blogger blog updates to two different blogs (one for each FriendFeed account). One updated instantaneously, the other took four hours to show up on my FriendFeed. I wasn't aware of the “edit/add – save” forced refresh trick until Louis Gray told me about it.

I use the same trick to refresh my feeds, if I notice that there is a significant delay then I force the update. They need to introduce a refresh all feature although it isn't really that disrupting. The best feed to update is Google Talk, as soon as you update status it's already on FriendFeed!

Do you ever notice a feed never update? That's the case with my del.icio.us and last.fm services. A refresh does the trick.

That's odd. Seems they are having trouble with spidering. Seems a refresh should be forced when a user views his or her own page… Would be a good logic inclusion.

until a minute ago when i used the refresh button my del.icio.us hasn't been updated for a few days (while last.fm has). actually, since i joined friendfeed a couple of days ago delicious never refreshed automatically (and one time it even didn't manually – i removed and added my del.icio.us account to friendfeed, to get my latest bookmarks).

    that's really annoying.

Ross Miller responded to my email about it. I just posted it this morning: http://solyoung.com/2008/07/02/friendfeeds-resp…

We're stuck using the refresh button.
